The Famine. By: Jayla Harrison
Over 3,000,000 children born during the Holodomor died of starvation. “A tragedy developed. People became swollen, they died by the tens each day. The collective farm authorities appointed six men to collect and bury the dead from our village of 75 homes, by May 24th houses were empty where all the inhabitants had died” – Mykhaylo Naumenkowas. Ukrainians endured harsh and evil obstacles as well as the loved ones trying to cope with death. Stalins’ ascend to power and his thirst for wealth and hatred of small landowners was the beginning of the famine. Greed, liquidating of farmers, and collective farming were all factors of death. He definitely did not make surviving this famine easy or possible for that matter.
Stalins' money hungry and possessive attitude were both factors for failure along with his idea for collective farms and "liquidating" farmers. Putting Stalin to power was the downfall of the USSR. Ukrainians were dying at a whopping rate of 25,000 per day. "I saw Tetyana eating chicken meat and saw there was a lot of it. I approached her for some, but she refused to give me any. Because it was human flesh." - Mykhaylo Naumenkowas. Cannibalism was the last resort.
